Cristina Gallardo-Domâs

Soprano Cristina Gallardo-Domâs, who made her LA Opera debut as Desdemona in Otello in 2008, returns to the Company as Matilde in the world premiere of Daniel Catan's Il Postino (September 2010).

Born in Santiago de Chile, she began her studies at the Modern School of Music, graduating with a higher diploma in singing. She later completed her studies at the Julliard School of New York. After her European debut in 1993 in the title role of Suor Angelica at the Spoleto Festival, she sang Magda in La Rondine at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1994. Her interpretation of Suor Angelica in Willy Decker's production at the Cologne Opera was also highly acclaimed.

She is a frequent guest at the most important international theaters including the Teatro alla Scala (Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Faust, Manon, Turandot, La Traviata, La Bohème), the Metropolitan Opera (La Traviata, La Bohème, Turandot), Vienna (Pagliacci, Turandot, La Traviata, Les Contes d'Hoffmann, La Bohème, Simon Boccanegra), London's Covent Garden (Turandot, La Bohème, Madama Butterfly), Paris (La Traviata, La Bohème, Les Contes d'Hoffmann, I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Faust), Munich (La Traviata, La Bohème, Otello), Berlin (La Traviata, Otello), the Amsterdam Concertgebouw (Pagliacci, Suor Angelica), the Teatro Colon of Buenos Aires (Suor Angelica, Mefistofele), the Salzburg Festival (Turandot), the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Turandot) and in Tokyo (La Traviata).

She has worked under the most famous orchestra conductors, such as Riccardo Chailly, Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, Antonio Pappano, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Christian Thielemann, James Levine, Georges Prêtre, Valery Gergiev, as well as with producers including Franco Zeffirelli, David Pountney, Harry Kupfer, Willy Decker, Jürgen Flimm, Robert Carsen and Anthony Minghella.

She opened the season at the Metropolitan Opera in New York performing Madama Butterfly conducted by James Levine and produced by Anthony Minghella. In December 2007 she debuted in Il Trovatore in a new production at the Opera in Zurich. In 2008 she performed Manon Lescaut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Bohème in Zurich and at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. In summer 2008 she recorded Puccini's Edgar for Unitel at the Festival in Torre del Lago.

Highlight of future seasons include Turandot and Manon Lescaut at the Opera in Munich, Il Trittico at the Teatro Real in Madrid and Otello in La Coruña. At the Metropolitan Opera, she will return in La Bohème and Les Contes d'Hoffmann.
